Alcoa streamlines structure

Alcoa Corporation has announced that it is consolidating its business units to reduce complexity. Effective immediately, the aluminium smelting, cast products and rolled products businesses, along with the majority of the energy segment assets, will be combined into a new Alcoa Aluminium business unit (BU). Boyne smelter cuts

According to reports, Rio Tinto’s Boyne aluminium smelter in Gladstone is set to slash more than 100 jobs and about 80,000 tonnes of annual production — worth $US160 million at current prices — because it has been unable to secure economically-priced power from state power providers. The production and job cuts are almost double those flagged in January, when Rio Tinto said it would cut 8 per cent of production, or 45,000 tonnes, and about 30 jobs because power price spikes were hitting production cuts.

Hulamin: Record sales

Hulamin, a leading aluminium product and beverage can maker released full year 2016 results earlier this week and reported record sales volumes and double profit after tax.   The company was ridden by irregular electricity supply from Eskom and gas supply problems during the last year. Orbite: 1 tpd HPA

Orbite is approaching 1 tonne per day of HPA production. "We are very pleased with the progress of production, and we are on the doorstep of our intermediate goal of continuous 1 tpd production," stated Glenn Kelly, CEO of Orbite. "In the coming weeks we will continue to produce HPA, while completing test runs to calibrate how equipment and operations respond to certain changes in feed, temperature and throughput. We will then progress towards feeding higher purity ACH crystals to achieve 5N+ product and then continue our ramp up to nameplate capacity."
