RUSAL: Sustainable efforts

RUSAL has announced an ambitious pledge to plant over one million trees in Russia as part of its climate strategy aimed at reducing the Company’s carbon footprint. The initiative represents Russia’s largest ever forest restoration project. Power failure at Karmøy

Hydro’s aluminium plant in Karmøy, Norway suffered from a power failure, starting 03:50 CET on April 1. Power supply has been reestablished, but at a lower amperage. The incident has caused no personnel injuries. Hydro Karmøy has an annual production of around 270,000 tonnes primary aluminium, whereof 75,000 tonnes is the Karmøy technology pilot. According to reports, hackers have demanded ransom from Norway’s Norsk Hydro as part of cyber attack. Norsk Hydro said on Tuesday it had been hit by a ransom cyber attack of unknown origin, with hackers demanding a ransom. “The situation is quite grave,” said Norsk Hydro CFO Eivind Kallevik. “This virus is a so-called encryption virus, also commonly known as ransom virus,” he told a news conference. Aluminium recycling could double with new reforms, says Green Alliance.

New reforms, including a deposit return scheme (DRS), could see aluminium recycling almost double if implemented, preventing around £50 million of wasted resources each year, according to a new report by environmental think tank Green Alliance.
