Aluminum Industry Responds to White House Clean Power Plan

ARLINGTON, VA – The White House is announcing today final regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which will reportedly require that the nation’s existing power plants cut emissions 32 percent from 2005 levels by 2030. This reflects an increase from the 30 percent target originally proposed in the draft regulation released last June.

Aluminum Association President & CEO Heidi Brock commented:

“The aluminum industry remains committed to the continued availability of reasonably and predictably-priced power as a cornerstone of American manufacturing. While we recognize the importance of minimizing greenhouse gas emissions as a policy goal, it is critical that these decisions are made in a global context. Through voluntary efforts, the carbon impact of producing primary aluminum in North America has dropped by 37 percent since 1995, meaning that aluminum made here is some of the cleanest in the world. Regulations that increase the cost of electricity hurt our global competitiveness and drive aluminum production to high-carbon regions overseas."
