Aluminum-Clad, Gold LEED Certified 1400 Crystal Drive Features Capitol Views, Airport Access

ARLINGTON, VA.,  — The Aluminum Association announced today that it will move its headquarters to 1400 Crystal Drive in Arlington, VA effective June 22, 2015. The new building is aluminum-clad and is certified Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) standards.  The Association collaborated with CBRE’s Nonprofit Practice Group on the move with the goal of a more collaborative space that showcases aluminum and enhances the Association’s culture of advocacy.

“This is an exciting time for aluminum as this innovative industry continues to expand.  As we enter a period of game-changing growth, the Association has the opportunity to emphasize our policy and market focus while maximizing the experience for our membership in a more modern office,” said Heidi Brock, President and CEO of the Aluminum Association.  “CBRE’s Nonprofit Practice Group, OTJ Architects, Omnifics, Kadcon and our membership have all been instrumental in helping us achieve our goals in creating a modern space that enhances our mission and vision.”

“The Association’s new office space reflects the expansion and growing influence of the aluminum industry,” said Aluminum Association Chairman Layle “Kip” Smith, President of Noranda Aluminum.  “The LEED-certified building represents what the industry stands for -- sustainability -- and the location will help us continue to advocate for the continued growth of the aluminum industry as a vital part of the modern manufacturing economy.”

The new office features 6,300 square feet of dynamic open workspace, designed to increase collaboration across the organization, and membership. A custom built screen that features aluminum coil provided by United Aluminum and Jupiter Aluminum, as well as billet provided by Sapa will be showcased as a new art piece.  A system of custom aluminum louvers made from aluminum bar stock, with integrated lighting, will wrap around the reception area for an immersive aluminum feature. Additionally, aluminum is emphasized in construction materials and furniture selections from floor tile accents to door frames to seating selections.

“The Aluminum Association will thrive at 1400 Crystal Drive and we were pleased to represent and assist them in the move,” said Manny Fitzgerald, Executive Vice President of CBRE’s Nonprofit Practice Group.  “The Association is the second tenant at 1400 Crystal Drive and the building is ideally located to advance the group’s mission and vision for proximity to policymakers, ease of access for visiting members and the important initiative to promote aluminum.”

The new office is conveniently located near Reagan National Airport, the VRE train and Metro, making travel easier for members, staff and visitors.  A rooftop terrace with views of the Capitol and D.C. skyline, staff lounge and interior courtyard are among the amenities at 1400 Crystal Drive.

The North American aluminum industry is entering a period of significant growth and innovation. According to recent preliminary Aluminum Association data, the industry shipped an estimated 25.5 billion pounds of aluminum in 2014, the most since 2006 and reflecting 5 percent year-over-year demand growth. From the 2009 baseline, demand in the U.S. and Canada has risen nearly 40 percent. At the same time, Aluminum Association member companies have announced domestic plant expansions and planned investment totaling more than $2.3 billion, intended to capture and meet anticipated demand growth for aluminum in the automotive sector as automakers strive to make lighter and more fuel-efficient vehicles.  The investments announced to date could increase industry auto sheet capacity by more than 2 billion pounds over the next decade.
